Boxwood, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the earliest horse farms in Middleburg, Virginia, a region of American colonial and Civil War history.

Originally settled in the eighteenth century, the farm became a well-known horse farm, the home of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of military aviation, and now the site of Rita and John Kent Cooke’s Boxwood Winery.

To accomplish this goal, John Kent Cooke asked renowned viticulturalist Lucie Morton to design the sixteen acre vineyard and Purdue University Professor of Enology Richard Vine to advise architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen on the design of the state-of-the-art winery.

In 2006 Stéphane Derenoncourt, one of Bourdeaux’s greatest winemakers, became consultant to Boxwood. Today Stéphane works with Boxwood’s viticulturalist, winemaker and executive Vice President Rachel Martin, in developing the best blends for each vintage.

In 1994 the Breauxs found themselves captivated with a picturesque piece of Virginia landscape that would rapidly evolve into one of the fastest growing wineries in Virginia. Along with scenic views, there were 3 acres of grapes on the 404 acre property that were planted in 1985. Those original grapes captured the heart of Paul Breaux, President and CEO of Breaux Vineyards, and sparked his entrepreneurial spirit.

The Breauxs soon began making hobbyist wines. Discovering that their home-produced wines were more popular among friends and guests than many commercial offerings, the Breauxs collaborated with Dave Collins to begin producing commercial wines at an even higher level of quality by investing in all new state-of-the-art wine making equipment and using proven vineyard practices, such as planting, harvesting and sorting by hand. In April of 1997, Breaux Vineyards opened its doors to the public.

Cana Vineyards is a family-owned winery. The property was a beautiful Middleburg hay farm when we first discovered it while out for a leisurely drive in 2009. In January 2011, we purchased the 43 acre parcel of land, nestled between the historic towns of Aldie and Middleburg and offering a view of the western slopes of the Bull Run Mountains.

The well and the road were completed in May 2011. We broke ground for our winery and tasting room facility in August 2011. Cana Vineyards began having soft openings on the porch starting September 22, 2012, and moved tastings indoors in November 2012 as we were finishing up the construction of the facility. As of December 2012, we are open Thursday – Monday. In January 2013, we published our first weddings brochure and began booking weddings. We celebrated our second anniversary on September 20, 2014.

Owners Lori and Jim Corcoran have an entrepreneurial spirit, and like many before them, they moved to Loudoun for the quality of life it promised their family. They bought 120 acres with Jim’s siblings and established a farm with cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens, and Lori planted a large garden. In 2001, they found themselves amidst a booming wine region and decided to plant grapes. Lori took winemaking classes and Jim transferred his research and development expertise from the high tech industry to winery operations. And as they say, the rest is history. Today, Lori is an award-winning winemaker, but she believes the wine is truly made in the vineyard, which is Jim’s domain. Corcoran Vineyards is intentionally a boutique facility, producing up to 3,000 cases each year, which allows them to have control over all aspects of the process. The Corcorans are engaging conversationalists and invite you into their quaint 1750s restored log cabin tasting room as if they’re welcoming you into their family room. If you are new to wine tasting, time your visit to participate in one of their sensory classes to learn how to decipher what you smell and taste in a wine. Corcoran also offers Aroma tastings in the Herb Garden, during the summer months, where renowned wine-maker Lori Corcoran pairs different wines with different herbs bringing out the layers and flavors in wine. It's the most fun you can have wine-tasting. Outside the tasting room, guests enjoy Corcoran wine at the picnic area overlooking the tranquil tree-lined pond.

Doukénie Winery is a family run winery located in Loudoun County, DC’s Wine Country where guests feel the warmth and hospitality of the Bazaco family from the moment they enter the tasting room. The Bazacos trace their success back to Doukénie Babayanie Bacos, who at 14 years old boarded a boat for the journey to America. Doukénie’s daughter, the aptly named Hope, married the elder George Bazaco and had three young children of her own. Summers were spent at their Maplecrest farm near the town of Windham in Upstate New York. This retreat clearly sparked the agricultural imagination of Hope’s eldest son, George. “George would get up really early and work in the fields all day on an adjacent farm,” Hope recalls, “He would arrive on the front porch covered in mud and sweat but with a smile from ear to ear.”

This charming winery was founded in May 2008 by, husband and wife, Clyde and Terry Housel. The couple, who came from long careers with the Federal Government, began planting their vineyard in 2001 and were grape-growers first. The Housel’s decided from the beginning they would focus on producing grapes, and then wines, of superior quality. Clyde, who is the winemaker and largely self-taught, is doing just that. Hiddencroft wines are approachable and readily drinkable. The red wines see plenty of barrel time…between 22 and 42 months. May 2017 marked Hiddencroft’s 10th vintage year and sampling red wines from their private cellar has told the owners their red wines have stood the test of time and taste better than ever. The white wines are complex and show the characteristics of the terroir…fruit, flowers and spice. Novelty wines of unusual flavors such as blueberry, cherry, apple, pomegranate and blackberry make appearances on the the tasting menu as well. In 2011, the Housels expanded operations to the adjacent property. The tasting room, once housed in their production facility, is now a circa 1850’s farmhouse. Open year-round, the farmhouse has two tasting counters with a view of the backyard, Dutchman’s Creek and a period kitchen building. The upper floor of the farmhouse has seating in three rooms and seat about 25. A large deck seats 30 guests under colorful umbrellas, and has an open view of the vineyard. Behind the deck, a large patio and massive fire-pit provide additional seating in Spring & Summer and warm ambiance in cooler weather. Flower gardens surround the house and attract the eye with bright colors and a multitude of butterflies. The property is a certified butterfly habitat of colossal size.

The Baki family bought the property in 2001 with the hopes of creating a vineyard and winery with the help of their son, Kerem, who at the time was studying Enology in the Graduate program at Virginia Tech. The family began their dream by planting each vine by hand in 2003 and started serving their first wines out of tasting room that same year. Bora’s other son Tolga, assisted in the business development and marketing of the vineyard while ‘Momma Baki’, Zeynep, established the beautiful aesthetics you see today in the tasting room and gardens.

The Baki family quickly realized that they didn’t just create a vineyard and tasting room to enjoy their delicious wines but a wedding facility as well and today hosts more than 30 weddings a year.

A great glass of wine starts right here in the vineyard. They say it’s easy to make a good wine from good grapes. It’s even easier to make a bad wine from good grapes. A top-notch winemaker can make a great wine from good grapes. However, it is impossible to make a great wine from bad grapes.

Rooted in old Franconian tradition, our boutique winery is taking wines in Northern Virginia to new heights. Located just outside the quaint town of Purcellville, Otium Cellars is set on a peaceful hillside in the country. Our quest is focused on making high-quality wines. We know great wines are produced in unique places and that is why our vineyard is based on the best terroirs of Catoctin and Western Loudon.

Planted in 2007, the vineyard is home to several German varietals: Lemberger, Dornfelder and Grau Burgunder (a German clone of Pinot Gris). An exceptionally maintained and grown vineyard...qualities you will taste in the Otiurn wines.

Rich soils, moderate elevations, good drainage and temperate climates form the backbone for our intense Dornfelder, Pinot. Chardonay, Cabernet, Malbec, and Blaufriinkisch. We believe wine is not only made in the cellar but is a philosophy and year-round effort in the vineyard.

Mosaics are a unique way of telling a story. The “mosaic” of Sunset Hills Vineyard is an intriguing balance of stone and wood, innovation and tradition, fine wine and opportunity which not only honors Loudoun County’s rich farming heritage, but is advancing the future of Virginia’s wine industry.

At Sunset Hills Vineyard, quality radiates in the “mosaic” of award-winning wines, sustainable farming practices, historic preservation, philanthropic pursuits, and exceptional customer service. Not surprisingly, for two consecutive years (2013 & 2014), Sunset Hills Vineyard’s 2010 Mosaic red wine has won the Gold medal and has been chosen for the Governor’s Case in Virginia’s Governor’s Cup wine competition. That dedication to quality continues.

Lew Parker, Willowcroft’s winemaker and owner, planted the first grapes in 1981 on the slopes of his farm that in the 1800s were successfully planted with orchards. Just as he suspected, the grapes were superior, and he was able to open Willowcroft in 1984 with vintages from his first fruit. That date marks the birth of DC’s Wine Country®. Lew is still the winery’s owner and award-winning winemaker today. He has kept the winery small, with 14 acres of grapes and producing 2,500 cases of wine annually. The winery and tasting room are housed in a large rustic red barn that dates back to the Civil War. After sampling Willowcroft’s award-winning wines, take a bottle and some gourmet snacks out to the traditional picnic tables that sit on a slope high atop Catoctin Ridge, which offers breathtaking and peaceful panoramic views of Loudoun Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Like all great pioneers, Lew has taken it upon himself to pass on his knowledge. He offers seminars on the art of winemaking to interested students who learn from him how to make wine at home, and are able to buy their grapes directly from Willowcroft. The winery also hosts many events throughout the year, including wine and soup days during the cold winter months, wine and movie "date" nights, and "wines of the world" tastings. One Washington Post writer wrote about Willowcroft, "After seeing Willowcroft, you’ll want to pack your bags, move to the country, and make wine."
